Critique your colleague’s suggestion about how to apply a systems perspective to Lester Johnson’s case.
Identify one way that a concept in your colleague’s post might contribute towards advocacy and social change.
Discuss how you might apply the empowerment and strengths approach to one of the concepts your colleague has presented.

Discussion in which you explain how multiple systems interact to impact individuals.
A system can consist of a family or like the produce section of the grocery store, anything that requires everyone to do their part to function as a whole (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2019). A mother has a system that consists of her family, including her kids and her husband. They work together to maintain their family. But the mother I also part of the system at work where she manages a department. The work system provides income so that the mother can have access to resources for her family. Childcare may also be another part of the system as this allows the mother to have a place to leave her children when she goes to work. The mother serves as the interface in each of these systems as she is the point where they all interact (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2019). A great example of how these systems work together is the daycare closing, which can also be classified as a differentiation. Differentiation is when the system shifts from simple to complicated (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2019). If the daycare closes, that leaves the mother with nowhere to leave her children and potentially causes her to lose her job. If the mother loses her job, then she will not be able to help contribute to the income or resources needed for the family. This can also create issues with her marriage.
Explain how you, as a social worker, might apply a systems perspective to your work with Lester Johnson.
Lester’s system consisted of his job, his church, his brother, and his children. Before Lester’s accident, he was independent, but now that he cannot function like he used to, it seems as if he has little to no support from those in his system. His brother is deemed his shared decision-making proxy, but he has handed that task off to his wife (Plummer et al., 2014). His children, who are his limited power of attorney, have shown little to no concern for his condition (Plummer et al., 2014). As far as applying the system perspective to Lester Johnson, it seems that his system is currently in entropy. Entropy is when the system begins to dysfunction or almost fall apart (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2019). Everything he had in place to ensure that his system was conditioned to run smoothly does not seem to be functioning as he expected. To help Lester out, we would want to apply equifinality. Equifinality is the concept that there are multiple ways to achieve a goal (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2019). Having the family conference will be helpful to see who is concerned and dedicated to helping Lester. But if nothing changed, I would assign Lester’s sister-in-law as the shared decision-making proxy as she has been the one taking care of him, and maybe also the power of attorney to ensure everything is in place for Lester. Then I would also see if perhaps some of his church members were willing to help his sister-in-law so that she doesn’t get overwhelmed.
Finally, explain how you might apply a systems perspective to social work practice.
When working with the client during the assessment, I would want to get as much information about their various roles. This is important during the assessment phase as this will help me establish the clients’ multiple systems and how they interact and ultimately affect their daily lives. The systems perspective will help me remember that a client’s issue of finishing a job maybe not simply be the job itself. It is perhaps the issue of finding childcare, then help to cover the cost of childcare. Or finding a job with suitable hours so that she can spend time wither family. The system perspective allows me to assess the client’s situation and help them overcome any obstacles to achieving their goals.
