As stated by Kloppenborg, et al. (2019) it is important for project management teams to add subject matter expert (SME) to the team as necessary to help the team accomplish the identified milestones. ILS invested in the loading dock employee for them to attain their CAPM to enable the company to have an internal SME that can help train others to allow for effective project management. According to Fisher, et al. (2005) having a SME within an organization does not always mean the individual has to be on the project team full time. Although the loading dock supervisor has not approved the assignment, it will be important for the project manager to present the benefits of having the CAPM on the project team.

The first step in negotiating resources is to have a conversation with the supervisor to understand what role the employee has on their team and how much bandwidth the employee has for additional work. Next, the project manager should understand why the supervisor does not want to change the way the warehouse is being run. During this conversation, the project manager should ask the supervisor about the lost work cases and how they plan to improve the statistics. In addition, the project manager should have a conversation with the supervisor about the potential for the organization to lose a SME if the individual is not able to continue to develop and utilize the skills they acquired.

As the project manager it is important to share the concerns of the DLS and the consequences of not taking the necessary steps to improve the warehouse. Additionally, the project manager will need to explain to the loading dock supervisor how not endorsing the project will impact the entire organization as it may result in layoffs due to the overall strategic objectives and what it might mean if ILS does not receive the contract for Walmart in New Zealand. The final component of the negotiation is to discuss with other areas if they have a team member who can provide the loading dock supervisor assistance during the project to ensure every department is working collaboratively to make improvements to the risks that were identified during acquisition.

I believe taking the time to listen to the supervisor, explain the benefits of the project, and offer them a solution that not only benefits the project, but also the loading dock, will show how the organization is working collaboratively to expand the business internationally.
