Competencies

For the two discussions in this unit, you will be familiarizing yourself with related resources on ASCA’s Web site: the “ASCA Mindset and Behaviors for Student Success,” and the associated grade-level competencies that support the standards. You will choose one of these items to develop more substantially for your Unit 5 Plan Outline assignment.

Imagine that you are establishing the mindset and behavior goals for your students. After reading through the mindset and behavior document and using the ASCA Web site as your resource, consider the imaginary school where you work.

Determine what activity you will include in your classroom guidance lesson plan, or small group session, to target a specific competency. It may be helpful for you to go to the ASCA Web site to search for competencies as you consider the rest of this prompt.

You are going to decide which competencies you will address and how you will achieve that goal. You will develop a total of four mini-discussions to address specific competencies in different domains. There is an example of two mini-discussions at the end of this instruction.

You will select one competency for a mindset, and three competencies for behaviors (one for learning, one for self-management, and one for social). You may use the same grade level, or change it according to the needs of your hypothetical school. For example, if you decide you work in an elementary setting, some of your competencies might be for K–2, while others might be for 3–5. Select at least one competency from each domain (academic, career, and personal or social). Select one outcome that addresses each competency. Use the “advanced search” feature on the ASCA Web site to quickly find the competency you need.

This discussion is designed to enable you to link any classroom-guidance lesson or small-group lesson to established standards that directly improve our students’ ability to learn. You can return to this Web page when you are employed as a professional school counselor to enhance your lessons by including which Common Core standards they also address. You can find that as you scroll down when looking at your advanced search results.

For example, you could write:

Grade: My targeted grade level is K–2.
Domain: Academic skills.
Mindset Standard: Self-confidence in ability to succeed.
Competency: My classroom guidance lesson plan (about classroom listening skills) includes an opportunity to tell a story or to recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences about what academic success looks like.

Grade: My targeted grade level is K–2.
Domain: Career skills.
Behavior Standard – Learning Strategy: Set high standards of quality.
Competency: My small group lesson (about conflict management) includes an opportunity to ask and answer questions about what the plan was about in order to clarify comprehension, gather additional information, or deepen understanding of a conflict or disagreement.
